A Touchstone Energy Cooperative

Safety

Albemarle EMC operates power lines with voltages as high as 35,000 volts. This is almost 300 times higher than the voltage in your outlets. When we work with these high-voltage lines, our number one concern is safety. We are surrounded by electricity in our homes and offices every day. Safety must be a concern because, regardless of the voltage, electricity can be dangerous.

Electricity Safety
  • Always call Albemarle EMC before digging.
  • Be careful using a ladder, pool skimmer or any long object. You may come in contact with overhead lines.
  • Look before you climb any tree to be sure no wires run through or near it. You could be electrocuted if branches come in contact with the wire.
  • Keep electrical appliances away from any water such as rain, wet ground, swimming pools, sprinklers and hoses.
  • Be alert for bent plugs and frayed cords on electrical appliances and fixtures. Have them replaced if they are damaged.
  • Fly your kite away from power lines and substations.
  • Never put your finger or anything other than an electrical plug in an outlet.
  • Pull by the plug not the cord when unplugging an appliance.
  • Don't overload outlets.
Storm Safety

We all know that our area is prone to severe thunderstorms and hurricanes. Whenever such a storm arises, please follow these helpful tips:
  • Keep away from windows and open doors.
  • Don't use electrical appliances or the telephone. Lightning can follow the wires into your home.
  • Stay out of the water. Never go swimming or boating during a lightning storm. If you're in the water, get out as quickly as possible. Lightning can follow metal plumbing pipes, so avoid the shower or bathtub during a lightning storm.
  • Avoid trees, poles and other tall objects. Avoid large metal objects. These things are targets for lightning.
  • Go to low ground and crouch down low if you're caught outdoors.
  • Keep a flashlight, battery-powered radio and batteries on hand in the event of an electric outage.
